SCHOOL TALK

Mobilising the community against drug-abuse and towards a drug-free Singapore

In recent years, youths in Singapore schools are going through a lot of underlying issues and that has led to many negative lifestyle choices to help cope with the intensity of their problems (S. Sherlyn, 2024). Central Narcotics Bureau of Singapore statistics have also shown that the average age for drug consumption is 15.9 years old (S. Tee, 2024), this shows that students start drugs very early and are unaware of the harmful effects of drugs.

Adolescents are generally in the identity confusion stage (Leahy, 2007), therefore, they are easily influenced by things that could possibly make them feel good or fit in. At this stage, if the deeper underlying issues are not addressed students will slowly start to internalise certain concepts and they can possibly grow up with negative concepts about life. These can possibly lead them to become malcontents and commit crimes.

School talks also intend to address the deep rooted issues in students that lead them to consume drugs. We intend to try to talk about the root of the problem, so that students become more self-aware of what they are feeling and positively introspect on their decision-making skills, therefore, they would not be quick to resort to temporary pleasures to ease the process and suffer in the long run.

Purpose of the Program

The school talk is designed to intervene at this pivotal stage of adolescent development. Our goal is to delve into the root causes of these issues, helping students to understand and confront the emotions and pressures they face daily. By fostering greater self-awareness, we aim to equip students with the tools they need to make informed and positive decisions, rather than turning to temporary, harmful solutions like drug use.

Through this program, we seek to address not just the symptoms—such as drug consumption—but the underlying causes that lead to these behaviors. By guiding students towards introspection and helping them develop healthier coping mechanisms, we aim to reduce the likelihood that they will resort to dangerous choices to manage their struggles.
