Empowering students with knowledge and advocacy skills to effectively combat substance abuse in their communities
ACT Badge Overview
The SANA (Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association) Badge Scheme was established in 1977 with the primary goal of raising awareness about the substance abuse problem among youths, particularly within Uniform Groups in secondary schools. It is now known as ACT Badge. This initiative has played a crucial role in educating young people about the dangers of substance abuse and empowering them to make informed decisions.
Goal
Students can have better understanding of the substance abuse situation in Singapore, the consequences of substance abuse and how to deal with different situations without turning to substances.
Impact and Significance
ACT Badge not only educates students about the dangers of substance abuse but also equips them with the skills and confidence to become advocates for positive change. By progressing through the tiers, students develop a deeper understanding of the issue, learn how to communicate effectively with their peers, and ultimately contribute to a broader societal effort to reduce substance abuse.
This tiered approach ensures that students are not only informed but also actively involved in spreading awareness, making them key players in the fight against substance abuse in Singapore.

The ACT Badge is structured as a tier-based proficiency program, offering students the opportunity to earn badges at three levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Each tier is designed to progressively build the students’ knowledge, advocacy skills, and impact on their peers and the wider community.

Bronze Badge Scheme
Objective
To raise individual awareness about substance abuse.
Methodology
This introductory tier has been adapted to an online format, where students are provided with educational content about the substance abuse situation in Singapore, its causes, and consequences. Students engage with this material at their own pace and then complete an online assessment to test their understanding.
Outcome
Upon successful completion of the assessment, students receive an online certificate and are awarded the Bronze badge, signifying their foundational knowledge in substance abuse prevention.

Sliver Badge Scheme
Objective
To encourage peer-to-peer advocacy within the school community.
Methodology
This tier is project-based, focusing on creative and impactful communication. Students who have earned the Bronze badge are tasked with designing a poster that raises awareness about the dangers of substance abuse, drawing on the knowledge they’ve acquired. The posters are then showcased within the school, where participants take on the role of anti-drug advocates, engaging with their peers and spreading awareness.
Outcome
Successful completion of this project results in the awarding of the Silver badge, recognizing the student’s role in educating and influencing others in their immediate environment.

Gold Badge Scheme
Objective
To broaden the scope of advocacy to the public and create a wider impact.
Methodology
The Gold Badge tier is reserved for students who have completed both the Bronze and Silver badge. Participants in this tier are given the opportunity to take their advocacy to a larger audience, such as community events, social media platforms, or public campaigns. The aim is to amplify their message beyond the school, potentially creating a ripple effect in the broader community.
Outcome
Those who successfully engage in public advocacy are awarded the prestigious Gold badge, symbolizing their commitment to combating substance abuse on a larger scale.
